2023 statistical information on biomass origin in accordance with the RED BP scheme

  • In Lithuania, the percentage of transactions executed with the RED BP specification was 85%; under these transactions, 48 buyers purchased biomass and 92 suppliers supplied biomass to them.
  • In Latvia, the percentage of transactions executed with the RED BP specification was 70%; under these transactions, 9 buyers purchased biomass and 16 suppliers supplied biomass to them.

Statistical data of companies registered in Lithuania

It is evident that, in the case of biomass combusted in Lithuania in 2023, 82% was produced from a variety of residues:

  • Timber harvesting residues accounted for 42% of combusted biomass;
  • Other residues (land clearing, etc.) accounted for 22%; and
  • Timber industry residues accounted for 18%.

Firewood accounted for 16%, and short rotation coppices grown for biomass accounted only for 2%.

In terms of origin, as much as 98% of combusted biomass was of local origin, and 2% accounted for Latvian origin.

The average GHG emission of biomass received by Lithuanian companies that participate in the RED BP before combustion amounted 5.36 g CO2e/MJ. For comparison:

  • Heat production: the GHG emissions rate of the comparable fuel for production of useful heat prescribed by the Directive is 80 g CO2e/MJ. If an undertaking produces only heat from biomass and its biomass boiler efficiency amounts to 90%, its GHG emissions saving when using biomass will amount to: (80 – 5.36 / 0.9) / 80 = 92.6%.
  • Electricity production: the GHG emissions rate of the comparable fuel for production of electricity prescribed by the Directive is 183 g CO2e/MJ. If an undertaking produces only electricity from biomass and its biomass power plant efficiency amounts to 50%, its GHG emissions savings when using biomass will amount to: (183 – 5.36 / 0.5) / 183 = 94.1%.

Statistical data of companies registered in Latvia

In Latvia, the greatest share of combusted biomass also accounted for various residues (88%), 10% accounted for firewood, and approximately 2% accounted for short rotation coppices. In terms of origin, 95% of the received biomass was of the Latvian origin, and 5% accounted for Lithuanian biomass.

The average GHG emission of biomass received by Latvian companies that participate in the RED BP before combustion amounted to 4.84 g CO2e/MJ.
